Nerve. What is nerve? I guess it is an effect of the information system passing in and out of the brain. Nerves determine how our organs function. It determines what sort of actions we take.
The most important thing directly affecting nerves is our perception. Let’s take an example here. MS Dhoni in a situation like say 2 balls 6 runs left. He will most probably perceive that situation as “not bad or good” as in it is not 1 ball 6 runs, so the margin of error is there. Whereas a normal player may panic thinking he has 2 balls only to score 6 more runs. Notice, same situation, differently perceived, thus, the nervous system of the two players will be very different. Let’s not focus on which one’s good or bad. We know that.
What we must focus on is how to develop a Dhoni like perception? First, with the belief that it is very much possible to develop one. It starts from there. But then how do we develop the belief that it’s possible. By faith, one and only mechanism. How much ever deep we go in matters of belief and perception, beyond a point, we have to be in a freefall. It is because reality is much more complex than what we’ve come to know so far. Matters of belief, and perception is inseparable from a reality that is infinite.
We have to let go of the protective rope at some point, and learn to do rope walking without any protection. The fear will have to be conquered by doing that which scares us the most. Letting go to leave it on faith, the unknown is often the scariest. However, only then faith finds us. And, when it does, the nerves calm down knowing we are being looked after.
Believe me, it sounds ridiculous at first to people who’ve not let go of the protective measures completely. Drop it for once, leave it to the unknown and see what happens. It’ll do wonders, not magically at once but, gradually, and surely.
