The thing that I sometimes wonder most about is how would the knowledge of another habitable but so far lifeless planet impact our society?
The first thing might happen is the colonising of the planet. First the rich would go and start using its resources. Maybe bring some of the resources here on earth for more profit. Eventually humans would start residing over there and then identify themselves of that planet and maybe not allow others from earth to enter it. They’d eventually not want to share the planet and it’s resources with people on earth.
Anyways all these are something which will happen in the ‘new planet’ and not on earth. So let’s try and think how earth will get impacted by that knowledge. First of all there will be new kinds of business which might devalue the old ‘earthly businesses’. The burden on earth’s resources would probably reduce which I believe would also make the availability of resources more affordable. All those possibilities are imaginable provided the humans colonising the new planet don’t identify themselves as its rulers or something and shut shop saying ‘we don’t want to share or have any connection with earth anymore.’ The likelihood of that happening is very high with our natural instinct of trying to constantly own things.
Even then I would say the load on mother earth would significantly reduce if a chunk of our population start inhabiting somewhere else. Let’s face it, we have been ravaging our mother in the name of profit and dominion over each other for ages. I’d say all that is but natural to some extent. But far too much has been taken from earth than what is required is also a frightening fact. Why frightening? It is because inadvertently it is only accelerating our own extinction. Earth can only sustain so much mistreatment.
Our natural instinct is to survive on and on. Nobody wants to die, is it? So, it is but natural that we would like to survive even after earth perishes and so on. How would we do that? By migrating I’d say. To migrate from this planet or even the solar system we’d need to innovate newer advanced technology. It would be easier for us to focus on it if the distractions of other things go away. Here, by other things I mean profiting and dominion over each other. These distractions seem to be instinctive in us. By that we are destabilizing earth at a faster rate than normal. The negativities causing by our instinctive behaviour is actually causing a lot of delays in discovering newer things that could benefit us in the long term. This behaviour is being caused only by our apparent lack of understanding of impersonality.
All this put together I’d like to believe that we might still be at a primitive stage where the majority of us are trying to assert dominion like any other animal species. In some cases it is intellectual and in other cases physical. Yet, I believe we have the potential to be much better than that. This potential needs to be realised soon enough for us to be able to really assert ourselves as a great force of nature. I believe we’ll get there. We have to in order to survive. How soon will depend what steps are being taken by us now.
